The MSU College of Human Medicine provides medical students with comprehensive training in clinical settings that closely parallel the environment in which many physicians practice. First and second-year students begin the medical education program at either the Secchia Center in Grand Rapids or on the campus of MSU in East Lansing. Clinical experience is provided at 14 leading hospitals across the state, including Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids.
The MSU College of Human Medicine was founded in 1964 as one of the first community-integrated medical schools. In 2010, the school moved its headquarters to the newly constructed Secchia Center in Grand Rapids.
MSU College of Human Medicine offers a myriad of clinical and research/education academic programs. The program is divided into Blocks: Block I, the first year, is a 37-week experience; Block II, the second year, is a 32-week experience; and Block III, the clinical years, is a 77-week experience over two calendar years.
The average age of entering students is 24, with a range from age 20 to the mid-40s. Some students have completed postbaccalaureate studies or hold advanced degrees; others are nontraditional students changing professional direction.
The Secchia Center is located along the "Medical Mile" in Grand Rapids - a designated downtown area that also includes the Van Andel Research Institute, Spectrum Health's Butterworth Hospital complex, the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, and more.
