          Grand Rapids Community College

          Overview

Grand Rapids Community College offers opportunities for over 32,000 students annually in Associate degree courses, certification and training programs, workshops and personal enrichment classes.

          History

GRCC was the first community college in Michigan. It was founded in 1914 as Grand Rapids Junior College by the Grand Rapids Board of Education, following a resolution passed by the University of Michigan faculty. In 1991, voters in the Kent County Intermediate School District agreed to a millage proposal redistricting Grand Rapids Junior College to a community college.

          Programs

GRCC organizes instruction into two schools: The School of Arts and Sciences, with 13 programs, and The School of Workforce Development, with 17 programs. GRCC also serves more than 400 local businesses annually with its Job Training and Continuing Education and Professional Development programs. The college grants Culinary Arts and Culinary Management degrees through its Secchia Institute for Culinary Education.

          Students

The average age for full-time students is 23. Part-time students comprise 43% of enrollment. The student gender ratio is 54% male/46% female.

          Athletics

GRCC's Raider athletic teams compete in men's and women's basketball, tennis, baseball, softball, golf and volleyball. Most teams participate in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association. GRCC is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, has won five national titles in baseball and has been the runner-up five times in five different sports.

          Location

The GRCC main campus encompasses more than 25 acres in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. Additional instruction sites include a variety of regional centers around the metro Grand Rapids area and on the West Michigan lakeshore.
