Cornerstone began operation as an evening Bible institute on January 7, 1941. The scope and curriculum evolved over the years, with the institute eventually becoming a four-year Bible college and seminary. In 1972, the institution was approved by the State of Michigan as a degree-granting college of arts and sciences. Once known as Grand Rapids Baptist College and Seminary, the Cornerstone name was adopted in 1994.
Cornerstone offers more than 46 undergraduate academic programs in the arts, sciences and theological and professional studies, as well as 16 advanced degrees. Nearly 20 off-campus study programs are offered in 10 countries. Most popular majors include business, management, marketing, education, and theology and religious vocations.
Approximately 1,800 undergraduate students and 800 graduate students from more than 45 faith denominations are enrolled at Cornerstone. The gender distribution is 40% male, 60% female. The student-to-faculty ratio is 20:1 and the average class size is 20. About 56% of students live in college-owned, operated or affiliated housing.
Cornerstone competes in NAIA Division II. It offers 15 varsity sports for men and women, as well as a variety of intramural opportunities.
Cornerstone is situated on 130 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds less than five miles northeast of downtown Grand Rapids.
